Italian Seasoning substitutes

The best substitute for italian seasoning is homemade italian seasoning: Per 1 tbsp: 1 tsp dried basil + 1 tsp dried oregano + 1/2 tsp dried thyme + 1/2 tsp dried rosemary, crushed between your fingers. This is what is in the jar. Crush the rosemary properly or you will find woody needles in the finished sauce.

Why it matters. A dried blend of basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary and often marjoram. It is a convenience item rather than a unique ingredient, which is why it is one of the easiest things in a kitchen to rebuild from what you already have.

A very similar thyme, oregano and savory base, but many blends include lavender, which is floral and can taste soapy in a tomato sauce. Check the label first.

Use three times the volume of fresh chopped herbs, added at the end of cooking

Dried herbs are roughly three times as concentrated, hence the ratio. Add fresh herbs late, because a long simmer strips them of everything.

Per 1 tbsp: 2 tsp oregano + 1 tsp basil

The two dominant herbs, so it covers most of the flavour. What is missing is the resinous thyme and rosemary background.

Dried oregano alone

Use about 3/4 the amount

Keeps the flavour role.

The single closest herb, but assertive and one-dimensional on its own, which is why you should use slightly less.

Dried marjoram + thyme

Per 1 tbsp: 2 tsp marjoram + 1 tsp thyme

Marjoram is a milder relative of oregano, so this is softer and sweeter. Pleasant, but it lacks the punch of a basil and oregano blend.
