Food education in schools – shouldn’t it be essential?

I am 31 years old and had public school education in England until I was 10, then moved to a private school until I was 16. In that time I had 1 year of ‘Home Economics’ classes where we made a few cakes and cookies, but I was never really taught about food, ingredients, calories, fat content, protein, organic vs non-organic, etc. However I was taught woodwork, art, Craft Design Technology and Latin (all of which I have never used since – and I even did Latin as a GCSE)....

Chef titles explained

If you have watched television shows such as Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, you will have heard various chef titles such as ‘Executive chef’, ‘Sous chef’ and ‘commie’ but you might not know what they all mean.

Most professional kitchens are very hierarchical. The structure will change depending on the size of the restaurant, its style and the number of people it serves.

Here is an explanation of some of the main...

When is a pizza box not just a pizza box?

We all know that companies are being pushed to ‘go green’ with their packaging, by way of using less packaging, using more recycled products and by creating packaging that can be recycled or bio-degradable.

I have come across Green Box which have devised a really simple but obvious idea for pizza boxes. Right now, all pizza boxes are basically the same – you know the type that Dominos Pizza and Pizza Hut use for delivery of pizza....

What type of cook are you?

In March 2009 I was in an apartment in Alicante, Spain with 1 friend plus a group of 9 other people who I had only just met. We were out there on a rock climbing holiday. As the first day was wet, we had retired back to the apartment early in the evening and had picked up some food for dinner. The food was a mixture of salad, fish, bread, ham, cheese, sausage, etc. I don’t think it was very well planned, but there seemed to be a quite a bit of everything so certainly nobody would go...

Aoife - I'll see you there! :-)

Good to meet you too Carly. I like how you review restaurants. I critique them all the time with my friends but don't write about them - mainly because there aren't that many decent restaurants in Milton Keynes and I don't want to get banned lol.

Scrambled eggs

I liked this. I didn't used to add milk, but the milk made it more airy and fluffy.

Bread and butter pudding

The recipe looked easy, so I tried it myself.

Then I found out that as well as being easy to make, it was also very tasty!

I might try it again with whole-grain bread and see how that turns out.

Chocolate chip muffins

These were really easy to make!

I also added banana pieces which was nice.

When was the last time you tried a different supermarket?

There are 2 large superstores that are convenient for me - one near my office (Sainsbury's) and another near my house (Tesco).

I prefer the one near my office because they seem to have a better selection of food. Plus they have more check-out counters so the service is faster.
