About me:
I spent a couple of years in a cloistered contemplative monastery where I was one of two cooks. We would rotate weeks, with Sunday being the end of our week, and our biggest meal as it was a feast day. I would prepare a meal to feed between 18 to 20 monks in addition of up to 10 additional guests daily. On my "off" weeks I would bake around 14 loaves of bread, multiple deserts, soups and special breads for the Friday meal where the monks could only eat bread and water due to strict fasting. Outside of holy seasons such as Advent and Lent, where the monks would be on a no meat fast, we would eat meat on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and of course Sunday which was a feast day. Monday and Wednesday were fasts from meat and Friday was bread and water (with a vegetarian soup for main meal).
I'm no longer a monk and no longer Catholic. I'm currently investigating the Quakers and striving to live a more simple and rational life, which includes my cooking and eating.
I now cook mostly vegetarian meals though I consider myself flexitarian, so I may cook or eat meat every now and then.
