Ingredients

Imperial | Metric | USA
  • 300g dark chocolate (broken into pieces)
  • 150g unsalted butter
  • 6 medium eggs
  • 50g caster sugar

Optional

  • 1 handful icing sugar (to sprinkle over the cake)

Directions

Step 1

A 20cm round cake tin lined with greaseproof paper.

Line a 20cm round cake tin with greaseproof paper.

Step 2

Melting chocolate in a bowl, over a wok filled with hot water.

Melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water.

Step 3

Chocolate cake mixture, mixed in a bowl.

Whisk the egg yolks with two tablespoons of sugar.

Stir in the melted chocolate.

Add the remaining sugar to the egg whites and whip. Then add this to the chocolate mixture and stir.

Step 4

Chocolate cake mixture in a cake tin.

Pour the mixture into the cake tin.

Step 5

Chocolate cake being baked in an oven.

Place in the middle tray of a pre-heated oven at 180ºC / 350ºF / gas mark 4 for 20 minutes.

Remove and leave to cool for 5 minutes

Step 6

Chocolate cake on a plate.

Turn over and place on a plate.
